  1. The Ian- Knot technique:

  • Place the shoe facing the side that you are demonstrating it to. The laces should fall on both sides of the shoe.
  • Get hold of both the laces from the two sides and pull them one over the other to make a knot right in the middle of the shoe.
  • Have your fingers face towards you and grip your shoelaces with your pinky fingers. Make half rectangle or lobster claw shape with your fingers (thumbs and forefinger) and grip the shoelace.
  • Your pinky finger should do the job now. Grip your shoelace with your pinkies and make lobster claw with them.
  • Next step is to twist your fingers so that they face each other. It should appear like two half rectangles are closing in on each other. Pull the laces in opposite direction making an “X” shape.
  1. The Bunny ears technique:

  • Again, point the shoe towards your audience if demonstrating the procedure.
  • The best way to make your small children learn fast is to color code the shoelace. Have different colors for the bottom, mid and upper part of the shoelace so that the children can keep track which color stays at the top or the bottom of the loop. The tree structure helps give the process a direction.
  • Tie a basic knot right in the middle of the shoe.
  • Hold the shoelace between your thumbs and two fingers and make a loop. If you are following the tree structure, use the green part as the leaves (mid-section) of the tree and the brown parts as the trunk (ends of the laces).
  • You have to use the other hand to tie the loop back to the other end. In the tree trick, ask your child to make a knot around the trunk.
  • Other option is to poke the knot on the shoelace through the hole and make one more loop.
  • Last step is to hold both the loops together and pull them in the opposite direction to tighten the grip.
  1. The circle technique:

  • Point the shoe towards your audience if demonstrating the procedure. Make the laces should fall on both sides of the shoe.
  • Get hold of both the laces from the two sides and pull them one over the other to make a knot right in the middle of the shoe.
  • Tie another knot over the first knot but keep it loose.
  • Make a circle with the loose knot and thread one side of the shoelace into it.
  • Take the end of the shoelace to other side and thread the other end of the shoelace into the circle.
  • Final step is to pull the bunny ears tight.
